"You sit down and think while I call Captain Miller. Where have you been? What have you done? Who have you talked to? Think about those questions, and write down everything you can remember. We have to figure out what's going on or we won't know how to fight them."
D.J. went to the kitchen, her mind turning the problem over and over, searching for an explanation.
They searched for something. Something McCall had. But whatever they wanted hadn't been in the house when they ransacked the place and hadn't been worth killing McCall then to obtain. But now it was.
Why?
D.J. dialed the station and was put through to the captain. She explained the situation, along with her theories.
"Get him out of town, Halloran," Captain Miller barked.
"Huh? Me? I'm suspended."
"Consider yourself reinstated." He broke off and mumbled something to himself.
"What was that, Captain?"
"I don't know why I'm bucking the system for you, Halloran, but something tells me to put you on this assignment. Don't ask me why. Call it a whim."
D.J. pulled the phone away from her ear and frowned at it in confusion. A whim? The captain wouldn't know a whim if it flew up and tapped him on the shoulder. Come to think of it, he'd been acting strangely ever since the morning of her suspen-
